I have a high view of church membership, and I hope to lead my church to have the same view. I believe the best starting point for setting high expectations of every church member is a new member class. Whatever descriptor you use for the class, whatever time slot you choose to teach the class, every new member class should communicate three key points about your church: information, doctrine, and expectations.

As Western Christians, we often begin discipleship by teaching specific content—going through a book and attempting to teach or learn factual concepts. But have we missed the mark? Do you use these two key elements of discipleship in your ministry?

I have a confession: I only really started thinking about domestic violence lately because UBA is hosting an event this September. I fear my apathy is fairly commonplace in our churches, too. So, here we are with some information about domestic violence. Though we have to fight to keep and protect a soft heart these days, I pray we will do just that.

We value family prayer, and we champion prayer in the home. Before we assume that all families must pray, though, let us consider 5 families that do not need to bother praying.

One of the painful lessons we learned at UBA was that we didn’t have enough mechanisms built ahead of time to respond fast enough. We learned that lesson alongside many other agencies and networks. This time, we’re going to do better.

“We need to talk.” That simple sentence can spark fear and trembling, especially when there’s disagreement. We know conversation is a path forward but we also fear it may be unproductive and difficult. When we create a container for overheated conversations, we can talk things out without hurting ourselves or anyone else. We can make progress toward mutual understanding and decision-making.

Sabbatic leave is a gift. Once it’s granted, though, some times we don’t know how to use it. If you have been granted a sabbatical leave, spend this rare and precious time carefully. To succeed, plan well and focus on these four key areas.

When evangelical Christians consider the large number of immigrants coming to North America, they most often think of the unreached. Though many unreached peoples come to the US every day, many more immigrants are brothers in sisters in Christ, who we can (and must) learn from.
