Lunar New Year is a special time for millions of people across the globe. But for Asian and Asian American Christians, the holiday presents unique challenges.
There is nothing quite like receiving a gift—especially those gifts we did not ask for and did not see coming. Young or old, rich or poor, culture to culture, it is all the same. Without hesitation, the mental checklist begins with how to get the most use out of what has been handed to us to change us for the better. This unexpected season of stillness is a gift to those who use it well.
How do local churches fulfill the mandate to declare the good news of the gospel when “going” to all people is curtailed by health concerns, discouraged due to risk, and dissuaded by public officials? Here’s how normative-size (less than 199 in average weekend attendance) churches can move forward in engaging people with the gospel during the COVID-19 crisis.

It is encouraging to get updates on what the Lord has been doing in the lives of friends and relatives over the past 15 to 20 or more years. It’s also important for us to make known the righteous acts of God, as we’re told in Psalms 105 and other places.

These strange times have called for some unprecedented innovation, and churches are certainly stepping up. All throughout the greater Houston area, churches are getting creative in their care for one another and the larger community. So we wanted to take a moment to celebrate just a few of the stories of the Body of Christ doing what it does best—sharing and showing the love of Christ.
There are a few big questions that must be answered before your church has in-person services again. I have co-authored this statement along with other Christian leaders from across our city about the need to continue providing online-only worship services through the month of May. It is clear that God wants to hear from His people during times of crisis, whether that’s the nation of Israel or the Bride of Christ. COVID-19 has created a once-in-a-lifetime situation that finds many families with less on their calendars and more time at home with one another. While we do not know how much longer this will last, we all expect it to end at some point. Before it does, however, perhaps families would benefit from sitting down and making two lists:
